Fratelli tutti

by Samantha Silver on 2020-10-05T08:28:59-07:00 in Religion | 0 Comments

On Saturday, October 3, Pope Francis I shared his latest encyclical Fratelli tutti with the world.  Read this message of a loss of human dignity in the world and a pathway to hope in English, Espanol, Italiano and other languages.

Then, read the news reports of Fratelli tutti at WSJ, New York Times, NPR, National Catholic Reporter and America.

Some quotes from Fratelli tutti:

"When the dignity of the human person is respected, and his or her rights recognized and guaranteed, creativity and interdependence thrive, and the creativity of the human personality is released through actions that further the common good”."

"Isolation and withdrawal into one’s own interests are never the way to restore hope and bring about renewal. Rather, it is closeness; it is the culture of encounter."

"Together, we can seek the truth in dialogue, in relaxed conversation or in passionate debate."

"An awareness of our own limitations and incompleteness, far from being a threat, becomes the key to envisaging and pursuing a common project."

"We need to learn how to unmask the various ways that the truth is manipulated, distorted and concealed in public and private discourse."

"Every human being possesses an inalienable dignity is a truth that corresponds to human nature apart from all cultural change."

"All this calls for the ability to recognize other people’s right to be themselves and to be different."

"Kindness ought to be cultivated; it is no superficial bourgeois virtue. Precisely because it entails esteem and respect for others, once kindness becomes a culture within society it transforms lifestyles, relationships and the ways ideas are discussed and compared."

"We need to “keep alive the flame of collective conscience, bearing witness to succeeding generations to the horror of what happened.”

"The firm rejection of the death penalty shows to what extent it is possible to recognize the inalienable dignity of every human being and to accept that he or she has a place in this universe."
