Types of Essays

There are many types of essays.  Some of the more common ones include Argumentative Essays, Analytical Essays, Comparison Essays, and Personal Statement Essays.

  • Argumentative essays prove assertions.  You must provide reasons and examples from a variety of sources to back up your hypothesis or opinion.
  • Comparison essays illuminate the similarities and/or differences between two or more topics.
  • Analytical essays interpret and examine a work of literature/art or historical event.
  • Personal Statement essays focus on the author.  When applying for scholarships or graduate schools, the personal statement is a way for admissions officials to "get to know" the applicant based on her/his experience, background, insights, and reflections.
