Instructions

  1. LOAD THE VINYL CUTTER:
    • Load the cutter with a roll of vinyl in the color you wish to cut.
    • Slip the vinyl sheet (color side up) in the slot in the back and feed it through to the front.
    • Align the vinyl with one of the vertical lines on the front left side.
    • Pull it down to the horizontal groove that runs along the bottom of the front.
    • Adjust the grip rollers for the width of the vinyl.
    • Push the grip lever up to lock the vinyl sheet in place.

  2. START, SET UP, & SCAN VINYL ROLL:
    • Turn the vinyl cutter on.
    • Press the Enter key on the vinyl cutter to let it know that you are using roll material.
    • After the cutter scans the vinyl sheet, press Enter again.
    • Using the arrow keys, move the vinyl back to the cutter head and press the Origin button.

  3. SELECT YOUR DESIGN:
    • Login to the laptop using your Mount credentials.
    • Make sure your design is flattened, then:
      • Outline all fonts
      • Merge all elements
      • Save as Illustrator 3 eps file

  4. IMPORT YOUR DESIGN TO VINYL CUTTER:
    • Open Cut Studio software. (type Cut Studio into the Windows search)
    • Import your design.
    • Check to see if it is the correct size and orientation for the vinyl loaded in the cutter.

  5. CUT YOUR DESIGN:
    • Press the Cutting button.
    • Your design will then be cut on the vinyl cutter.

  6. REMOVE FROM VINYL CUTTER:
    • After your design has finished cutting, advance the vinyl using the arrow key down and use an X-Acto knife to cut off the piece of vinyl that has your design on it. (you can use the groove to cut a straight horizontal line)

  7. WEED YOUR DESIGN:
    • At a table or on another flat surface, “weed” or remove the outside part of the vinyl that is not your design.
    • Use an X-Acto knife or other small tool to remove small interior bits that will not be removed with the outside layer (Example: the areas inside a letter such as “a” or “o” etc.)

  8. TRANSFER YOUR DESIGN:
    • Why use transfer tape?
      • Transfer tape helps you get cut vinyl from A to B without falling out of place AND allows you to make sure everything is placed in a straight line. This is especially helpful for lettering.
    • Remove the liner (backing paper) from your transfer tape.
    • Hold the transfer tape steady with the sticky side down.
    • Gently place transfer tape over your design.
      • Start in the middle and move outwards.
    • Then burnish (rub) the tape onto the vinyl.
      • Rub the tape-protected vinyl with a flat edge, ruler, or bone folder, making sure to work over all edges of the design in a circular or uniform motion.
    • Peel the vinyl from the liner (backing paper) at a 45-degree angle.
      • If the vinyl sticks to the liner (backing paper), simply burnish the vinyl again.
      • Peel the liner (backing paper) away slowly and carefully.
  9. PLACE YOUR DESIGN:
    • Make sure the surface that you want to adhere the vinyl to is clean and dry.
    • Place the design exactly where you want it to go with vinyl cuts facing out/down.
      • Double-check that it is straight or aligned in the way that you want it.
    • Burnish the tape-protected design again.
      • Start in the center and move outwards.
    • Finally, remove the transfer tape from the vinyl at a 45-degree angle.
      • If the vinyl sticks to the transfer tape, simply burnish the vinyl again.
      • Peel the transfer tape away slowly and carefully.

Weeding Tools

  • Burnisher - plastic flat edge used to smooth your design and make sure it adheres
  • X-Acto knife - helps you pick out small pieces and letter interior shapes
  • Tweezers - can borrow tweezers from the Crit supplies area to help get small bits weeded out
  • Transfer tape - will help you place your design on a surface, especially if there are multiple pieces or letters that you want to preserve in a straight line
