​Zotero​
Zotero is a free and open-source program that anyone can use, therefore, you will retain access to it even after graduation!

  1. Download Zotero Desktop App as a standalone program that works with Windows, Mac, or Linux systems.
  2. Download a Zotero Browser Extension for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge. For most databases and websites, citation information can be saved with just a few clicks
  3. Download a Zotero Word Processor Plugin for Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc. You can download an extension for Microsoft Word or your preferred word processor, that will allow you to drag records in Zotero into your Word document to instantly create citations in formats like MLA and APA.

Export Citations to Zotero

  • Login to EBSCOhost via the MSMU library website.
  • Locate an article and click on the title.
  • If you have the Zotero Connector (browser extension) installed you can just find it up in your toolbar and select the folder you wish to import your citation to.
  • If not, then:
    • Click on the Export icon (  ) on the right side of the screen (under "tools"). 
    • Select "Direct Export in RIS Format (e.g. CITAVI, EasyBib, EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager, Zotero)" and click save.
    • Login to Zotero on your desktop.  
    • Open the RIS file that you downloaded - it will ask if you want to import it to Zotero.
    • Open the folder you wish to move the citation into or alternatively you can import to your general library and then move citation to an appropriate folder.
  • Login to ProQuest via the MSMU library website.
  • Locate an article and click on the title.
  • If you have the Zotero Connector (browser extension) installed you can just find it up in your toolbar and select the folder you wish to import your citation to.
  • If not, then:​
    • Click on "...More" on the right side of the screen (under "Download pdf").
    • Then, under "Citation Export" click "RIS - Endnote, Citavi, etc."
    • Click "Continue."
    • Login to Zotero on your desktop.  
    • Open the RIS file that you downloaded - it will ask if you want to import it to Zotero.
    • Open the folder you wish to move the citation into or alternatively you can import to your general library and then move the citation to an appropriate folder.
  • Login to JSTOR via the MSMU library website.
  • Locate an article and click on the title.
  • Click on the "Cite this item" button on the right side of the screen.

  • Under "Export Citation." select "Export a RIS file (For EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager, Zotero, Mendeley…)"
  • Make sure that pop-ups are enabled for the JSTOR site on your computer.
  • If the Zotero Connector (browser extension) is enabled for your browser JSTOR will conncect automatically and allow you to select the folder you want to put it in directly from a little popup menu on the right side of you screen.
  • If the Zotero Connector is not enabled, the RIS file should download to your desktop as normal.
    • Then, login to Zotero on your desktop.  
    • Open the RIS file that you downloaded - it will ask if you want to import it to Zotero.
    • Open the folder you wish to move the citation into or alternatively you can import to your general library and then move the citation to an appropriate folder.
  • Login to Project MUSE via the MSMU library website.
  • Additionally,  if you like, you can create a Project MUSE account to save your articles and searches that way.
  • Locate an article. 
  • If you want to use or cite the article or book, save it to MyMUSE library. (you do not need a MyMUSE account to save articles, they just won't be there when you return for another search session)
  • Then, visit myMUSE library to see your saved items.
  • In the menu on the left select "Cite Library Items" MyMUSE Library - Cite Library Items image
  • Use the little check boxes next to the items to select which items you would like to cite.
  • Scroll down to the bottom and click the "Export to EndNote" button (this will be another RIS file that works with Zotero)
  • Make sure that Zotero is open on your desktop.
  • Your Zotero Connector (browser extension) will take over and ask which folder you would like to save your citations to in Zotero.
  • Your citations should automatically appear in the selected folder.
  • If the Zotero Connector is not enabled, the RIS file should download to your desktop as normal.
    • Then, login to Zotero on your desktop.  
    • Open the RIS file that you downloaded - it will ask if you want to import it to Zotero.
    • Open the folder you wish to move the citation into or alternatively you can import to your general library and then move the citation to an appropriate folder.

  • Login to PubMed via the MSMU library website.
    • Login to MyNCBI.
  • Find and open your desired article.
  • Near the top of the article - above the title - click the "Send to" button.
  • Select "Citation Manager."
  • Select "Create File" and a .nBIB file will be downloaded to your "Downloads" file.
  • Login to Zotero.  
  • Select "File" then "Import."
  • Choose the file you just downloaded from your downloads file.
  • Move citation to an appropriate Zotero folder.
  • Alternatively, you can use the Zotero Connector (browser extension) to import the citation and select the appropriate folder.
  • Login to Ovid via the MSMU library website.
  • Locate an article.
  • Check the box next to the article's title.
  • On the toolbar above your search results, click "Export."

  • Click the drop-down menu next to "Export to" and select "RefWorks."
  • Choose "Complete reference" and click "Export citation."
  • Login to RefWorks.  Citation information will import automatically.
  • Move citation to an appropriate folder.
  • Login to ScienceDirect via the MSMU library website.
  • Locate articles on search result screen.
  • Check the box next to an article's title.
  • On the toolbar above your search results, click "Export."

  • Click the  "Save to RefWorks" button.
    • Make sure that your browser allows pop-ups from the ScienceDirect site.
  • Login to RefWorks.  Citation information will import automatically.
  • Move citation to an appropriate folder.
  • Login to Gale Databases (ie. Opposing Viewpoints, Artemis, etc.) via the MSMU library website.
  • Locate an article and click on the title.
  • Click on .
  • Under "Export," click the RefWorks button.
  • Login to RefWorks. Citation information will import automatically.
  • Move citation to an appropriate folder.
  • Go to Google Scholar and search for an article.
  • Locate an article and click "cite."

  • Click "RefWorks" at the bottom of the pop-up window.
  • Login to RefWorks. Citation information will import automatically.
  • Move citation to an appropriate folder.
  • Login to Sage via the MSMU library website.
  • Locate an article and click on the title.

  • Click on "Cite" on the right side of the screen.
  • Then, choose RefWorks from the dropdown menu.
  • Click "Download citation."
  • Click "Submit data to RefWorks."
  • Choose Legacy or New RefWorks.
  • Click "Last Imported" and move citation to appropriate folder.
