Faculty Guide: MSMU Libraries Resources

Overview of library services and resources available to faculty at MSMU, including online and in-person class instruction.

Course Reserves in the MSMU Libraries

Instructors can place print materials on reserve at either of the MSMU Libraries using the Course Reserves Request Form (below).

Typically, reserve items have a loan period of two hours.  Instructors may choose to extend the time a student can check out reserve items. Longer periods include 4 hours, 1 day, 1 week, etc.

Reserve requests should be received at least 2 weeks in advance of student needs. During the first few weeks of the semester, processing may be delayed, so please plan ahead.

Course Reserve materials are located at the Circulation Desk at both campuses.

Best Practices for Electronic Course Reserves

  • One chapter, per book (if protected by copyright) or no more than 10% of the book
  • One article per journal issue
  • Try to use a web link to online materials available through the MSMU Libraries instead of a PDF

Guidelines for Fair Use

To put copyright material on the web for a course or educational site (Canvas) it is recommended that:

  • The webpage is password protected (e.g. Canvas is protected)
  • Access to the webpage is limited to students enrolled in the course
  • Use is for a limited time, usually one semester

*Due to interpretive variability of Fair Use, is it important to note that they are only guidelines, and NOT the law.  Copyright law is purposely vague to allow for interpretation in a variety of situations.
