HUM234E: Science and the Victorians studies selected scientific and literary texts of the Victorian Period, looking at how literature and science are influenced by each other, how together they shape and are shaped by their culture, creating analogies to explain their special visions of reality to the public, especially through the nineteenth-century phenomenon the periodical journal. Students will discover how these two seemingly antithetical disciplines were actually closely interrelated cultural practices that shaped and reflected the social, political, and economic hopes and fears of Victorian England and the British Empire.
